Bird surveyors needed - Northern NSW
Naree and Yantabulla Reserves are two large adjoining properties within the Paroo Floodpain/Cunnamulla Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), situated approximately 150km NW of Bourke in northern NSW. They are jointly managed for conservation by Bush Heritage Australia. The KBA is of particular importance as a critical breeding area for waterbirds in times of flooding rain in the catchments.
It is proposed to commence annual bird surveys in 2018 at a network of fixed points (40) already established in the various habitat types throughout the Reserves. The first survey period will run from 26 September to 7 October 2018.
The survey team will consist of 8 volunteers, coordinated by Richard Jordan, Convenor of BirdLife Northern NSW and Julie Morgan, Guardian of the KBA and Chair of Eurobodalla Natural History Society. A team of 6 experienced surveyors is already in place, with applications being sought to fill the remaining 2 places. Requirements for these positions include:
- Good hearing and vision.
- Enthusiasm to contribute to a valuable scientifically-based bird survey program.
- Ability to identify birds of the semi-arid zone of northern NSW by sight and sound.
- Experience with a scientifically-based bird survey program using Birdata methodology.
- The use of a 4wd vehicle for the surveys.
- Experience of navigating by hand-held GPS.
Relatively inexperienced applicants will be considered if they are prepared to gain the necessary skills and participate on a long-term basis. Survey teams work in pairs, so there is potential for an experienced volunteer to work with a relative beginner. Work of this sort is an excellent way to rapidly gain bird survey skills!
Cabin accommodation is provided, with hot showers and kitchen and dining facilities. Evening meals are prepared on the basis of two people working as cooks each day on a roster. There is an allowance to assist with fuel costs involved in travelling to Naree for those using their own vehicles, and diesel fuel is provided while working on the Reserves.
If you are interested in taking part, please contact Richard Jordan at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible - outlining your relevant background and experience.
